NEWS: Motorola Droid 2 Verizon pre-sale kicks off 11 August
R2-D2 limited edition Star Wars version planned as well
US carrier Verizon has announced that it will be opening the pre-sale for the Motorola Droid 2 on 11 August.
The network, fresh from its launch last month of the Motorola Droid X, will be offering the Android 2.2 device for $199.99 (after a $100 rebate) on 2-year contracts.
The Motorola Droid 2 features a 3.7-inch WVGA multi-touch screen, and has a full slider QWERTY keyboard. There is also a virtual keyboard option (including Swype) for quick messaging as well as a speech-to-text feature too.
The Froyo device comes pre-loaded with Flash 10.1 and also supports tethering. In order to make your Droid 2 into a mobile hotspot, you'll need to pay an extra $20 a month and for this you'll be able to sync it with up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices.
The Droid 2 packs a 1Ghz OMAP 3640 CPU and has 8GB of storage on board. It will come with an 8GB microSD card in the box, so you'll have 16GB in total - but you can up this to 40GB with a 32GB card.
It has a 5-megapixel camera and videos can be recorded in "DVD quality".
"With the new Droid 2, we’ve taken a big leap forward from the original", said Bill Ogle, chief marketing officer of Motorola Mobile Devices and Home Business.
"We listened to consumers and are providing an even more robust experience built on Android 2.2 that includes a new keyboard, increased processing power, Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities to send, access and share information even quicker than before".
As well as the standard Droid 2, Verizon has also announced that in September only it will be offering a limited edition R2-D2 themed Droid featuring exclusive Star Wars content.
There are no plans as yet to bring the Droid 2 to the UK, although if Pocket-lint hears anything we'll be sure to let you know.

Android First Impressions
I picked up an HTC EVO 4G on Friday.
One year ago I bought a Palm Pre. I *love* the Palm Pre. My biggest issue with the Pre is a lack of new products (still no follow-on announced) and the lost developer momentum.
Android, on the other hand, is doing very well in those departments.
What I like:
- Voice search ? just press and hold the search button on the bottom right, then say what you are looking for and the phone gives you the Google search results for what you just said. I"m shocked how accurate it is, especially considering there is no voice training involved. This is definitely easier/quicker than typing and it has already changed how I use a smart phone.
- Similarly, the on screen keyboard has an option to let you speak instead of type. I"ve used it for a few text messages and find it useful. I?m curious if I?ll use this more than the actual keyboard for txt messages?if it saves me keystrokes, then I will.
- Google Maps has Street View! Maps is a killer app for mobile phones?and having access to Street View makes it even more so. I really like how you can rotate your body in order to spin around in Street View.
- Google Scoreboard app: This app tracks your favorite teams, and tells you what time they are playing (in *your* time zone), where they are on TV/radio, and can notify you with score updates at start/end of game, or after every quarter, or score. It works great, it is free, and it has no ads.
- EVO uses the same Micro USB port that the Pre uses, so I don?t need new charging cables for home/work/car.
- Facebook app?written by Facebook. Automatically populates your phone?s contact list with information (email, phone numbers, address, etc) and profile pics.
- Twitter app?written by Twitter. Like the Facebook app, the Twitter app integrates with Android so that any contacts you have that don?t have pictures associated with them can get their profile pics from Twitter. App has fun cloud/bird animations that give it a unique look and feel.
- Foursquare app?written by Foursquare. Unlike the Pre version, this actually works well.
- Gmail. The Android version of Gmail is is more full featured than the Pre mail program (supports labels, collapsing conversations to a single message).
- Animated wallpaper.
- Shazam. Ever hear a song and wonder who sings it? Shazam can listen to just a few seconds of a song and tell you what it is. This *is* magical software.
- Phone kickstand. You can see a metal bar on the back on the phone in the image above. That metal bar extends so you can place your phone in landscape mode on a table for easy viewing. Useful when you use your phone as an alarm clock, watching movies, or a mini computer. Just add a wireless keyboard and you have a *very* portable computer, except the screen may be too small for heavy usage. Which brings me to?
- HDMI out. The phone can output to a TV via an HDMI cable (video/sound). If you want a much bigger display than the already ginormous 4.3 inch screen?just plug it into your TV!
- Mobile hotspot. You can use the EVO as a Wi-Fi access point for up to 8 devices! Finally?I can connect my laptop to the internet via my phone. My Pre could not do that (but my old Windows Mobile 6 Palm Treo could).
- Web browser. I found that more web pages load correctly on the EVO than they did on my Pre.
- I haven?t really thought about the performance of this phone, mostly because I haven?t had to wait for anything. I guess that means 1 GHz Snapdragon processor is fast.
- Android has a lot of momentum now, I only expect it to grow. It is nice to have a phone that developers are targeting instead of being an afterthought. There are a ton of apps to play with?much more than what is available for the Pre.
- Big 4.3? screen makes everything better: more details visible on maps, on screen keyboard has large buttons even in portrait mode, video more enjoyable to watch.
- HTC?s custom software is actually useful and not crap ware like I was expecting. I like the home screen big clock, weather, alarms, timer, and stopwatch. You can turn on a low light clock that stays on at all times if you want to use your phone as an alarm clock. The pinch to zoom for access to the 7 home screens is very fast/useful.
- Front facing camera for video chats. Not sure when I?ll use this, but it is nice to know I can.
- HD video recording at 720p.
- 8MP camera with 2 LED flashes.
- Supports 32 GB microSD card.
- Adobe Flash! It isn?t here on this Android release (2.1), but it should be when 2.2 come out?which won?t be long.
What I don?t like/miss:
- Keyboard. I still prefer the confidence of typing with actual keys.
- Notifications. They are handled *perfectly* on the Pre. Android needs some work. Android email notification only says you have a new message. Pre tells you who sent it and the message subject. Notifications on the Pre could be selectively deleted. So far, I?ve only been able to delete all notifications at once with Android.
- Task management. Pre has this done right, too. On the Pre, you press the "home" button and you instantly see small "cards" representing all the running applications. You swipe an app up to send it off the screen and kill it. You can rearrange the order of running apps. You can use the swipe left/right gesture to quickly move between running apps without going to a home screen/task switcher dialog (like pressing/releasing Alt-tab). With Android, I don?t see a way to kill an app (Android is supposed to manage this for you). Android appears to only support switching between 6 apps via a dialog that comes up when you press and hold the "home" button. It?s not terrible?but not as slick as the Pre.
- The Pre uses a universal swipe to the left or right to delete an item (like a mail message or a notification). Once you learn this, you expect you can do it anywhere?which is true on the Pre. Android doesn?t support the swipe to delete gesture?but I wish it did.
- The Pre has the touchstone charger that lets you charge your phone by simply laying it on a "puck?"wireless charging. If you get a call, you lift the phone off the puck and the call is automatically answered, just like the way a traditional phone works. Also if you start a speaker phone conversation while on the the puck, lifting the phone off the puck will switch speaker phone off. EVO just plugs into a micro USB cable. :(
- The battery life is about the same as what I was getting with the Pre?I have to charge a minimum of once a day, or more if I really use the phone. I keep it plugged in overnight and have a charger at work as well. It?s not a step back from the Pre, but I?d like to get back to the days when a cell phone only needed charging once a week.
- On the Pre, you can slide your launch icons where ever you want. If an icon is already in the , it will slide out of the way to a new allowing for easy insertions. Android, on the other hand, won?t let you do this. You must first make an empty space before you can drag an icon to a . Not a big deal?but not as slick as the Pre.
After using the EVO for a weekend and getting used to Android"I"m hooked. The EVO isn"t perfect and I do miss some of some of Pre"s niceties. Overall, the good almost makes you forget the bad.
I would recommend the EVO and Android to anyone.

NEWS: Five greatest Apple successes
Coruscating consumer creations from the corridors of Cupertino
Following up Pocket-lint's five greatest Apple failures feature, we thought it a good idea to produce a follow-up feature looking at some of Apple's greatest triumphs.
Whatever you may think of Apple in terms of its business, its secretive practices, or whether it's actually that innovative a company - there's no question that many of Apple's devices have changed the way many people view and use technology.
As to whether this is down to marketing and some good timing, or whether the innovation itself has been the source of success isn't certain - rather than being distinct it's more likely to be a bit of both.
So, in no particular order here's Pocket-lint's favourite Apple successes:
Macintosh
- Released:
- 1984
- Discontinued:
- 1985
- Cost:
- $2495
The first one on our list is a bit obvious, but the Macintosh computer really does deserve its place, not only on this Pocket-lint rundown but arguably on any list of innovative and successful consumer technology.
For us, this is mainly due to the introduction of a graphical user interface, which ensured a whole new experience - the interaction with icons proving a huge hit over more conventional methods such as DOS, whereby typing commands was the norm for running programmes.
It's rather analogous to the evolution of the sandwich, whereby only after the development (and successful marketing) does everyone think it blindingly obvious. And whereas it took a certain spark (and gambling addiction) for the Earl to place meat between bread, it also required a certain amount of gumption from Apple.
The new UI, as well as the introduction of the mouse and 128k of memory, made this a classic.
PowerBook 100 series
- Released:
- 1991
- discontinued:
- 1992
- COST:
- $2500
Despite Apple's use of the word "Power" to describe its first line of rather underpowered laptops, (sorry, but we're not counting the wholly un-portable Mac Portable) this line of laptops proved quite a hit with consumers.
The low-end 100 model had a 20MB hard drive, 2MB RAM and 16 MHz processor and cost around $2500 at launch, so for the money you weren't getting great specs. So what made it a success? It was the innovative design of its keyboard that proved most successful, as it was positioned towards the back of the device rather than the front - leaving room for hand rests either side of the trackball, which was another nice feature.
Both its keyboard layout and the trackball for cursor control stood the test of time, spawning many generations in the series and forming the basis for almost all laptops since. The PowerBook series continued until 2006 where it was replaced with the MacBook Pro.
iMac G3
- Released:
- 1998
- Discontinued:
- 2003
- Cost:
- $1299
The iMac G3 was for consumer computing what Blake's 7 was for sci-fi; as beneath a quirky aesthetic and very bad peripherals/props was a really innovative product which laid the foundations for future generations of machines.
Not only did it feature a USB port, which Intel will no doubt be eternally grateful for, but it also got rid of a 3.5-inch floppy disc drive, which although at the time was rather controversial - as the format was still in use - it pushed consumers into using CDs and networking in order to transfer data, just as we do today.
As is ever the case with Apple products, marketing also had its place and the great out-of-the-box experience that was super-easy to hook up to the Internet helped to see the device through three different iterations - G3, G4 and G5.
iPod/iTunes
- Released:
- 2001
- Discontinued:
- Still going
- Cost:
- $400 for 5GB
Although these two products are very different beasts, we've lumped them together for the very obvious reason that the iPod would not have been the success were it not for iTunes. Rather like Nestle and controversy, Nantucket and whaling or Dempsey and Makepeace - these two went hand in hand.
As the company looked to sell music downloads directly onto its hardware, it made burning shop-bought CDs to get music on your machine an unnecessary inconvenience.
Both products were launched in 2001, and are still going strong now, with a variety of updates to both hardware and software. The great marketing ploy which underlies these two Apple products is the way they tie consumers into the Apple eco-system. Once an iPod was purchased, an iTunes purchase would soon follow - cue a few new product launches, and since you've already splashed the cash on music you're far more likely to purchase the new hardware; and so it continues.
Yes, they have probably always been a little over-priced, but there's no denying the iDuo's massive impact on both the entertainment industry and the consumer electronics market since launch.
?
iPhone/App Store
- Released:
- 2007
- Discontinued:
- Still going
- Cost:
- $499/599
In a very similar way to the iPod/iTunes combo, Apple struck gold with the iPhone and its App Store. The launch of the iPhone in 2007 was greeted with much anticipation built up over months and months of speculation.
It wasn't all beer and skittles for the iPhone at launch in the beginning, however, as soon after the first incarnation went on sale ($499 for 4GB and $599 for 8GB) Jobs decided to stop selling the 4GB and cut the price of 8GB by $200 in September - initiating an angry response from early adopters.
Despite this, the iPhone was a massive success mainly due to its competent touchscreen, and an incredibly easy user interface which helped it become a mobile game changer. However, it was only when Apple, reluctantly, decided to open up the App Store to third-party developers that things really started to get moving, arguably, making the iPhone into the massive success it is today.

NEWS: 10 best office pranks for geeks
Tech traps for your co-workers
Ah, the office prank. Got to love 'em, provided they're not pointed in one's own direction, of course. There's a million and one of them out there on the intertubes to inspire, ape and have a good giggle at but we are of the geeky persuasion, are we not? For us few, us happy few, it is not simply enough to place a load of golf balls in someone's car - bloody funny though that is.
No, instead we must strive to add a sense of the tech to practical joking at work. So here, for all our amusement are the 10 best office pranks for geeks.

The old Scotch Tape under the mouse routine
Nice, simple, easy to do and very sneaky is this one. Simply head over to your co-workers desk armed with some sellotape and a pair of scissors. Snip off a small square of sticky and pop it directly over the optical mouse sensor on the underside of the desktop peripheral. It won't render the unit inoperable just bloody annoying and it might be quite a few days before your buddy figures it out. This will not work on a mechanical mouse.

The old Microsoft Office alarm routine
Really nice geek honey trap is this one. As the video indicates, go and find an empty Microsoft Office software box, fit a heavy duty sonic alarm and then plant the bait somewhere your fellow employees will notice it. It's up to you whether you film their fright or not.

The old green keyboard routine
If you really want to go to town here, the best way to do the old grass in the keyboard routine is to actually find an identical keyboard to your colleague's and spend a few days growing cress seed on it before making the switch when they go out to lunch. Otherwise, it's a case of heading out to the nearest garden, plucking up a load of strands and stuffing them in the cracks. This will not go down well if they have a state of the art finger tapper. Trust us here.

The old iOffice routine
If you happen to know an Apple fanboy or girl in the same company as you banging on about their iPad, iPhone or the latest amazing app they just bought, then this is the prank to dish out to them. They live for Apple, so just make sure that they've gone that extra mile that they were probably afraid to do in polite company in the first place. Get yourself on eBay and Etsy, bag every single piece of iTatt you can find a plaster their cubicle with the lot. The sad thing is that they'll probably love it.

The old Mario boxes routine
The circumstances as to when or why you might put a bunch of Mario blocks by someone's desk are rather unclear but it's obvious this is the work of a geek in the office somewhere. The hard part is finding the question mark JPEG but, after that's sorted, it's a simple print and stick operation.

The old Sega desktop routine
The Sega desktop is a case of serious dedication to the geek prank cause and you'll need you buddy to be on holiday for at least a day or two to get it sorted. Fortunately for the bods in the Sega office, community manager Aaron Webber was off for three weeks which gave them time enough to recreate the Green Hill Zone even down to the rings. Excellent work.

The old key switch routine
The keyboard switcheroo works as well with any letters and you don't have to lay down quite the same insult as the picture above. A simple message of "pwned" would do just as well. It's a nice, simple prank to play but does rely on your co-worker having an old enough keyboard to do it on without breaking the thing.

The old water cups routine
The room of water cups is a very neat trick and will take the kind of steady hand required to set a world record for domino rally. Notice the neat touch of the word "pwnd" just to make sure that the prankee doesn't think it was an accident.

The old Blue Screen of Death routine
Another very simple, non-invasive and speedy office prank is the old BSOD screen saver which will doubtless put the frighteners on your office chums when they come back to their displays and find that their computer has crashed. Whether it's a case of thinking they've lost all their work or the fear that the IT team will uncover something that shouldn't have been on there in the first place doesn't matter. That fact is, it's a stomach turner. You can download it here.

The old screen flip routine
The screen inversion takes a matter of seconds and will leave the geekier in the office sniggering away while those less tech savvy curse and scream. It's a simple trick. Just click Ctrl+Alt+the down arrow and the display will flip vertically and the mouse controls with it. Impossible to get out of unless you know the shortcut which is the same but with the up arrow instead.
